Madison Fire Department offers two different certification courses: EMT and Paramedic.
EMT
EMT classes are held three times each year
- Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) care for the sick or injured in emergency settings, perform emergent medical services, and transport patients to medical facilities. Working as an EMT can be a rewarding job and provides many opportunities for advancement and growth if you want to make it a career.
In order to receive an EMT license, you must successfully complete a formal EMT course and pass a national certification practical and written exam provided by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).
Madison Fire Department offers hybrid-learning courses that will provide the training necessary to become certified.
Our classes will cover how to assess patients, administer medications, and will teach skills such as managing respiratory, medical, trauma, and cardiac emergencies. The program will also provide instruction and practice in how to deal with bleeding, fractures, airway obstruction, emergency childbirth, cardiac arrest, and other common emergencies. Students will additionally learn how to use and maintain common emergency equipment such as AEDs, backboards, suction devices, splints, oxygen delivery systems, and stretchers. Lastly, this course will allow you to spend time on an ambulance and experience how these skills are put to use.

Paramedic
Paramedic courses begin in February of each year
Paramedics are EMTs who have more advanced training and provide a higher level of patient care. Because of their specialty training, they often work autonomously and are the leaders of their medical teams. Their training allows them to perform in depth examinations and evaluations and then treat patients with equipment and medications usually only found in the emergency department of a hospital.
Madison Fire Department offers training classes that allow students the ability to achieve paramedic certification without the constraints of attending classes in the traditional classroom setting. Our program will provide all the training necessary to become certified.
